Ken,
Thanks for your email. We’re doing fine here in Auckland. As you probably know,
Christchurch is quite a distance away, but because it is a small country we all
feel it together emotionally. The death toll is at least 120 and at least 200
missing. Only 60% of the buildings in the CBD are safe enough to enter. Rescue
workers are fanning out to the suburbs today to see what the damage is. It will
continue to be a difficult path ahead, especially as seismologists predict there
will be another big one sometime in the next 2-3 months.
We had a prayer gathering yesterday, and Christchurch was a big part of that.
On Sunday, our church is going down to the shops with some banners to allow
people in the community to offer condolences, prayers and encouragement. We’ll
be sending it down to a Salvation Army shelter. We’re also looking into sending
a team down with Salvation Army once the aftershocks settle a bit.
